Bengaluru: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will not make humans obsolete as it cannot set goals like humans, NR Narayana Murthy, president and co-founder of Infosys, co-founder. Nayarana Murthy was answering a question during the third edition of The Future of Learning Conference (FoL) held at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIMB).

The two-day conference – Learning to Learn, Unlarned and Relarned: Age of the Destruction and Innovation – was co-chaired by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Dr. of Symbiosis Institute, Hyderabad. Jagan Mohan Reddy asked Murthy whether AI would prove to be a threat to the relevance of humans. Narayana Murthy replied, “So much has been said about AI. We must understand that this is not the last thing. Because no computer can do the work that a human being can do.” He said that humans will remain relevant as long as they use their brains to define aspirational goals and new ways of doing things.

Murthy shared some insight into our education system’s need to change. “They’ll claim they don’t recall anything since the exam occurred some few months ago,” he said, “I remembered when I asked simple questions to students who just finished the computer science and wouldn’t know what their reaction would be. Murthy said most fail, tests are submitted, the results are good and what they learnt is overlooked.

Murthy said that former APJ chief Abdul Kalam wrongly believed that India would become a powerhouse in 2020. “I used to think he was a good friend, but he said this only but that doesn’t really matter.” Abdul Kalam had been a great man, but he obviously had been mistaken.
